Increase the amount of search engine love your blog gets in under 5 minutes!
I’ve never really cared how high my personal sites rank in search engine results. Page rank was not a number I thought about very often.
That was until Katy and I decided to take the web by storm and become full time work at home moms. Search engine ranking and page rank then became a direct influence over the amount of money I took home at the end of each day.
Might as well move that knowledge over to my personal blog as well huh?!
If you build it they will come is not always true! You actually have to put in the leg work and wait then wait some more and yep you guessed it wait a little longer. Even the most well thought out traffic plan for your site can take months to show any signs of working.
Enough of the fluff on to better search engine ranking for your blog we’ll start with two easy steps that you can do in under 5 minutes.
Tip #1
Permalinks
Login into the wp dashboard > Options > Permalinks >
Choose the option just under Default so you have links like mine below:
/2007/10/08/wordpress-secure-email-forms-that-work/
This one takes two minutes and won’t break your blog. Should you have problems go back into your dashboard and chose default again.
Tip #2
Search Engine Friendly Page Titles
I honestly can not remember where I picked up the below bit of code. I’ve done too much surfing in my attempts to research and slept since then so I do apologize about not giving proper credit.
Edit the header.php file of your themes to change the <title>blah</title> tag.
Copy and paste the below but replace with your site name:
<title><?php if (is_home()) { print “Your Site Name”; } else { wp_title(’ ‘); print ” : “; bloginfo(’name’); } ?></title>
What it does is give you a page title like so on post pages:
“This is the post title I gave my post : Your Site Name”
The if (is_home) part tells wordpress if this is the home page only show:
“Your Site Name” as the page title
