CRAP!!
Have you ever had an issue or bug you were desperately trying to fix only for it to become an obsession that drove you crazy? Well that’s how I spent my Saturday..
The current theme here on I’m So Blogging That is using the newest template I’ve created for Kiss My Code. Before I can package it for customer use or build new themes with it I had to test drive and make sure there are no issues or bugs. Normally this is not a time consuming ordeal. However today this thing totally pissed me off, took my entire Saturday, and now finally it’s bug free and ready to be played with.
Katy called me about the time I decided to roll out of bed today. I was up late last night to the tune of about 4am working on the new Band In My Hand redesign. It’s not ready to go yet. The redesigned version is still on a test server while I finish working out adding all the purses and products to the cart but it’s getting there.
She informed me that there was an issue leaving comments on my blog and wanted to let me know. “Crap I really don’t feel like fockering with it today but okay. Thanks for the warning girly.” I hang up and continue to lay my lazy butt around and then finally drag in to the office to see what’s up.
Sure enough when submitting the comment you’re taken to a 404 no post found error. What the heck could it be? Off the top of my head I’m thinking ..
- Permalinks
- Comment Form Code
- A Stray or Forgotten Bit In The Single Page That Calls The Comment Template
Out comes WinMerge and I compare files back and forth trying to see if I’ve left something out or written something in incorrectly. NOTHING! Didn’t see any immediate issues. Grab the default wordpress theme for 2.2.1 and compare my single.php and comments.php data to the default. Really not seeing anything php wise that should be spitting this error out at me.
I dig farther and replace my custom file with the comments.php file from the default . Nope still have the same issue wtf is going on here. I then overwrite my custom single.php file with the default and BINGO it works! Granted it looks like complete and utter shit because it’s not styled to my theme but it works.
But here is where I’m stuck! There is no difference php or loop wise between my custom files and the default theme’s files. So what is causing the issue.
Turns out the problem was the search form data I had at the bottom of my single.php so if you don’t find what you’re looking for the search form pops up in the place of the post. I pull it out and still have issues. Opened the sidebar.php and removed the search box from there. Perfect it all works!
Now I have a cute new theme but no search actions. Yeah my visitors will LOVE that!
Enter now the next 3hrs of my day playing between Google and the wordpress forum to find an answer. I’m not one to post for help unless I’ve exhausted all possibilities of finding the answer myself. Finally some one else has the same problem and an answer. His answer did not fix my problem but it shined a big freaking spotlight on my issue.
While comparing his fix for the searchform.php and my file I notice one big, bright, shiny, if it were a freaking snake it would have bit me difference. His had the term “</form>” and the end of the file.
Yes people you guessed it! I spent all day with process of elimination trying to figure out what went wrong. What went wrong was this dingy chick forgot to close the damn search form!
Problem Solved! I will now go hide in a corner and hope no one has the 10lb balls to call me on my dumbass stupidty.

Hey, we all make mistakes :) At least you’ve got the guts to admit it :P
And since I can now comment: I LOVE this theme :)
OMG, Nerd, Nerd, Nerd. Look at you always telling me “did you close your tags?” “Did you __, __, __, __!”
Oh yeah, it’s gonna be a little while before you live this one down. HA HA HA, I need something fresh to bug you about!
Thanks Sarah, I really love it too.
I went back and forth over keeping it all to myself or using it on Kiss My Code. Told Katy I’ll keep it to myself for just a bit then we can release new themes using the template. So be on the lookout for them when they’re ready.. LoL
Katy - Kiss My ASS Woman!
Although I bet it is really nice to pull the RTFM card instead of having to hear it.. Mwahahaha I was so pissed at myself how could I have missed something so simple, ya know? Oh well at least it’s fixed now. Yay!
ugh! I hate it when the simplest little things can feel like your day is going SO wrong! I’ve had many moments like that and it’s so frustrating! I’m like you… if I can’t find my own answer, I try to find it by searching and most of the time will find someone else that had the same problem/question, etc, but even though it’s never exact, it usually helps. But I’m glad you finally found it! Pat yourself on the back! :)
Totally love the new theme btw! Very nice choice of blue! :)
