Caught Him In The Act!!

The house was so quiet you could hear a mouse shart..

I wonder to myself where is my pre-teen and what is he doing so quietly? Then I walk in on him doing it!!

OMG he was really doing it.. I caught him right in the act!! WTF?!? I’m confused, shocked, stunned silent no words could escape my mouth.

Yep he was reading a huge chapter book all on his own. Sitting quietly at his desk with the xbox, tv, and stereo off. He even had his cell turned off to avoid interruption! POD PEOPLE HAVE ATTACKED!

I must have missed the national disaster warnings on tv & radio. Was my house the only one hit or were teenagers all over town spending quiet time reading in their rooms?

The midget has been stressing over grades this 9 weeks. He knew his reading grade was low so he asked to pick up with his private tutor to help get him back in the swing of things..

Mid way through the grade period his progress report showed an F for reading. I talk to the teacher find out his work is great but this year he has to read so many books out of class then test on them for the other 50% of his reading grade. My kiddo hates to read long books. So he speed reads to get to the end. Not being able to recall a single freaking word of the book!

Without recalling the info he can’t pass a test on the book. They can’t reread the book and test again. So he keeps going through this process. Well all I can say is thank the gods cause this kid is back on track now thanks to his super private tutor. I think my kid’s problem is that he won’t take the time to pick a book he is interested in. He WILL NOT read the blurb on the back so never finds anything he likes enough to put the full time into it. I must say our school library sucks. So we hit the book store and made a list. Turned the list into his school and asked for approval for the ones listed. We’ll know soon if he has to stick to the older than me books at school or pick some new interesting ones.

His fave thing to read is the daily and Sunday paper. He will sit for hours on end with a red and green pen circling the classifieds. Red circles the cars and stuff he will present to grandpa to buy for him. Green for the cheaper stuff he will hit his dad up for. That little monkey so has a system going on. What a little conman just like his mommy!! LoL

Now for all you dirty minded folks I have a question.. Just what were you expecting this post to be about with a title & intro like this one.. Mwahahaha Dirty Bastards!

You are such a nerd. I’m so glad he’s reading though and what a great idea to come up with your own list for books to read and ask for approval. Something needs to motivate him to be interested in reading, if for no other reason, his grades!

    Go Jon!!!!

Oh, that reading from a school-approved list of books, then testing for a portion of the grade used to be “the devil” for my youngest. She devours books she can select on her own though, one after another. Seems like your biggest hurdle for getting titles approved would probably be finding ones that already have tests available or that tests can be made for. That is excellent, that your son really does enjoy reading. :)

My sister used to read that way. It finally caught up with her, and she’s finally realized how to do it the right way, at least when it comes to testing for them. I got lucky, and speed read, but can recall insignificant details along with the important stuff. Drove both of my siblings insane. I’m hoping my kiddos end up like me, but if they end up like Daddy, that’s good too, because he has a love of reading as well ;)
